A Prayer To Be Noble, April 13

A PRAYER TO BE A NOBLE PERSON, A Prayer for April 13

Oh, Heavenly Father, You are All-Good
I thank You for the protection You give.
If I sleep or am awake You guard me.
Fill me of that same spirit of the Master,
He, the One, "Who went about doing good"*
Exchange my selfishness for pure virtue,
May I discern the noble from the vain,
And not spend my life on unworthy dreams.
Enable me to conquer temptation.
Grant me Your measureless strength in weakness,
And Your awesome power when I am faint.
May I become more thoughtful of others;
Make me tender with those who have sorrow,
Help me to be loving to the downcast,
And let me be generous to the poor.
May I be merciful to the oppressed
Grant me a kind spirit toward all men.
Make the words of my mouth sweet and gentle.
May I seek the wayward and lift his load,
If any are mournful may I bring comfort,
And help me to defend the oppressed-
To stand near-side and share their suffering.
Let my joy be good deeds done in Your name.
That God is pleased shall be my great reward.

*Acts 10:38. KJV

A little commentary: When we live for the good of others we become a better person for it. It is something we are not able to do on our own but we need the power of God's Grace and the energy of his Holy Spirit living in us. Jesus is the example of the noblest and virtuous person who ever lived. His whole life was a life of service which was most clearly seen when he sacrificed himself on the cross for our sins.

Please indulge my invention of a new word, "near-side" but I wanted to convey not just standing near and not just standing beside but both and more. It helped me keep the meter to ten beats.

PRAYER FOR FORGIVNESS

“Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.” Psalm 32:1, NIV.

Prayer For Forgiveness

Oh God of Justice and of mercy
I have not yet received your complete forgiveness
I am guilty of sins against you and others
I know Jesus died to pay for my sins
And rose from the dead- proving he is victorious.
I trust Jesus to be my Savior from guilt and punishment
I receive your forgiveness and accept your blessing
From now on I will gladly serve you my Savior.
I thank you Father for sending your Son to die for me
Thank you for the blessing of forgiveness.

A little commentary. Sin is an ugly word, so is guilt, and shame; and we don't want to think about it; we feel that those who talk about sin are judgmental. But what about forgiveness? Forgiveness is beautiful and wonderful it is liberating and empowering. God offers forgiveness because he first offered his son to pay for the price of our sin. Because Jesus death satisfied the judgment of God against sin we can start a new life of freedom and beauty in love and service.

FREEDOM, A POEM TO GOD

Freedom, A Poem to God

I enjoyed an arrogant freedom,
My coming and going was my own.
I recognized no wall around me;
I wore no man’s tin dog tags,
And no fetters held my feet.
I could tread upon any pathway;
Climb the cliffs of my choice,
And sleep upon any shore.
I shared my liberty with no other;
To be unbound was my pride.
Independence was my joy.
Until I met You, Jesus, Savior;
And learned the true liberty
Of being bound by Your love.
Now you are the shore I sleep on;
You became the road I walk,
And the country I dwell in.
Now You are all of my boundaries,
I wear your name around my heart.
Freedom and You became one.
I find glory in that I am Yours.
I am free by belonging to You.

DIALOGUE WITH JESUS

Dialogue With Jesus

“I give them eternal life and they shall never perish.”
Hey, Jesus, I’m not sure I heard you right.
Jesus, did you say, “I give them eternal life?”
Who are you, Jesus, to say such a thing?
Who are you to give out such riches?
Do you possess this Life to hand out at will?
Don’t you know only God can do that, Man.
Didn’t you mean you pay out eternal life?
You know to the deserving.
Or give it to those who merit it?
But I guess not because the greatest teacher who ever lived
Would have said paid, or earned, or merit,
so you must mean give it.
And Jesus you said. “Never perish.”
Don’t you know that would be eternal life?
Ok. Jesus, I get it. You are saying something big.
You do something only God can do. That is to give out eternal life.
You must be God to do that.
And if you are just giving it out that is fine with me.
Because that is the only way I will ever get it.
I will never earn, or merit, or deserve it.
And I like what you say, “Eternal life…. And they shall never perish.”
That makes it clear like you mean really eternal.
Like forever, like without end.
Since you are giving eternal life, Jesus, well. I’m ready.
You are giving it I will accept it.

MERCY

Mercy,
A Poem

One man rejects Christ
Only to stand before God in Eternity
He holds out empty hands and cries
“Mercy!”

Another receives Christ
He stands before God in Eternity
Jesus holds out scarred hands and proclaims,
“Mercy!”

THE KEY

The Key

Could we forge a key here on earth
That will unlock heaven,
A key to let a man in?

What if it is hammered out by good deeds?
No,
One false dead will break it.
What if it is tempered by sacrifice?
No.
Half efforts will crack it.
Could it be shaped on the anvil of faith?
No.
Just one doubt will melt it.
Suppose it is cast in the furnace of devotion?
No.
Fickleness will cool it.
Will treasure given unlock heaven’s gate
No.
The price is far too high.

Is any key forged here on earth
Sufficient for heaven:
Pure, clean, and holy?

Yes, a key has been made,
A key unlike any other,
Acceptable to God.
Smelted in a Roman forge,
Hammered by a centurion,
And put into the Savior’s hand.

THE CALL

The Call, a Poem

Atop earth’s peaks
beneath a blue sky
humanity
stands on granite stone
lifting empty shaky hands
asking,
“Won’t somebody love me?”
The universal desire:
millions of voices,
saying,
“I want to be loved.”
What happened to
perfect answer?
Who stole the power
of Jesus’ words,
“For God so loved
the world that he gave
His only Son…?”*
When did His words become
only cultural?
Doesn't Jesus mean
it personally?
For me?
Above the peaks of stone
God
with open, kind hands
is saying
“I love you…
You.”

For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

COME, A Poem

COME,
A POEM

To Peter the Rock
in the boat
Jesus says. “Come.”
To the rich ruler
with Questions
Jesus says, “Come.”
To Lazarus
in the tomb
Jesus says, “Come.”
To the thirsty
in this life
Jesus says, “Come.”
To all of us
where we are
Jesus says, “Come
unto me
all who labor
and are heavy laden
and I will give you rest
for your souls."

HEAVEN BOUND, A POEM OF FAITH

Heaven Bound
A Poem Of Faith

We spend our days
Moments
And Years

Casually,
Occasionally,
Preparing ourselves

To spend
The sum of time
In a place

Carefully,
Deliberately,
Lovingly prepared
By Another.

"And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." John 14:3
