The Pilgrim's Path
A Christian Poem of Journey
With aching legs we climb
Hard packed stone roads,
As rucksacks cut into
Sunburned red backs.
Eyes squinting against
The razor sharp white light
To look over the top
Of a mountain road
Now conquered.
Only the road leads
To a land beyond of
More distant hazy blue
Mountains to climb
Rising one behind the other
Far away above the mist.
This long hard climb
Was only a step
One of many days
Toward a far country.
Why do we think
We have arrived
When we have only begun?
Holding our companion's
Nail pierced hand
He guides us to that land
Step by step
To himself.
A little commentary: People say it is not the destination it is the getting there that is important but to the Christian it is not the destination we travel through in this life it is the one who guides us that is important. The pilgrimage of our lives here on earth is a pilgrimage to Jesus.
